Vincent Kompany is shrugging off the praise being heaped on his sparkling form this season as City have leapt to second in the Barclays Premier League table.
The Belgium international centre-half and his partner Kolo Toure have been outstanding at the heart of the Blues' defence, with Kompany's performances his best since arriving from Hamburg more than two years ago.
But Vincent, a leading candidate for September's Etihad Player of the Month award, said: "I am progressing - that is all it is. I think I have performed ever since I have been at City.
"I always think you can only be as good as your last game, so I have to do equally as well in my next match, or even better if possible. That is the attitude I have. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
"The team is getting better, and I am getting older and have more experience. I am willing to learn.
I will expect more from myself the more games that I play. That is always my attitude
"I started earning my medals three years ago - I started performing three years ago, and I am still working. The hard work is what is showing now."
Kompany & Co recovered from conceding a rare goal against Newcastle to claim a 2-1 victory over the visitors and keep leaders Chelsea within four points going into the international break.
It was hardly City's best performance of the campaign, but Kompany added: The result was the most important thing. We didn't play at our best but we did the job and that is what mattered.
"We can look at the league table and feel we have done a good job so far. We are in a great position now."
