Stuart Taylor reckons fellow City goalkeeper Joe Hart can soak up the pressure and become England's automatic first choice for years to come.

Hart's faultless competitive debut against Bulgaria had critics declaring him England's best since Peter Shilton as Fabio Capello's side opened the European Championship qualifying campaign with successive wins.

Blues No.3 keeper Taylor, who regularly deputised for David Seaman at Arsenal, said: "Joe's performances for us have been top drawer and he was brilliant for England, so I'm not surprised.

"Sometimes that can put too much pressure on you. But I don't think Joe is one of those who will let that bother him. He's quite a level-headed lad who won't let the pressure get to him.

"He just gets on with it, that's his personality and one of his big attributes - he can just go out on the pitch and perform - he never really feels the pressure.

"He's done unbelievably well. If he carries on progressing like he is, there is every chance he will be England No.1 for a long time to come.

I hope it happens, because he's a nice lad as well

"It won't go to his head. He's one of the first out there every day - he won't suddenly start strolling out late. He'll work as hard as he can and he's got all the enthusiasm in the world."

Stuart is equally certain that Hart's emergence can only benefit the club with Republic of Ireland hero Shay Given staying on to battle for the Blues jersey.

He said: "It's not often you get a goalkeeper of Shay's calibre sitting on the bench. It's great competition between the two and if Joe starts to slip then Shay is waiting in the wings. It keeps them both on their toes."
