City v Villa: Stat attack

As City and Villa gird their loins for their third meeting of the season, we have dug around for a few stats ahead of the fifth round tie in the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON.

It’s one-all so far this season between the two sides, but City have the upper hand over the Villains in the world’s greatest knock-out competition, with five wins to two over the Midlands outfit.

The most recent cup meeting was at the same stage five years ago, and it needed a replay for City to progress to the quarter finals. That came about thanks to a dramatic late equaliser from Micah Richards, who let his understandable delight get the better of him when interviewed live on television just a couple of minutes later!

The replay took place three weeks later and saw the Blues make it through thanks to goals from Georgios Samaras and Darius Vassell, although a strike from Steve Davis in the 86th minute set the pulses racing. Villa’s reserve goalie that night was Stuart Taylor, who will fulfil the same role for City tonight.

Villa have just one win from nine visits so far to the City of Manchester Stadium, and overall we have a decent strike rate against them with 21 goals for and six against.
