Roberto Mancini has remained level-headed at the end of a day that has seen City move back to just three points behind Manchester United in the race for the Barclays Premier League.

City's efficient win over Wolves came hot-on-the-heels of their title rivals dropping points in dramatic fashion in a 4-4 draw with Everton.

Sergio Aguero set City on their way, but the floodgates did not open in the way they had done at Carrow Road, with Samir Nasri adding a second that sealed the game, and Wolves' relegation to the Championship.

Reflecting on the game, Mancini said: "It was so-so, I don't think we gave as good a performance as against Norwich, but today it was important that we won. We were OK, but our performance was not perfect.

"Maybe it was because we knew that we needed to win, or maybe because before we thought this game was going to be easy. I said it would be difficult because of Wolves' position near the bottom of the table.

"We had a lot more chances to score, and I'm unhappy about it because we made a few mistakes but it was just important that we won.

But even with a mouth-watering Manchester derby on the horizon, Mancini is refusing to get carried away and preferred to focus on the fact that there are still three games to go for both City and United.

"I'm happy with our form, but we have three games to go and they are all going to be very difficult. I still think United have a bigger chance than us at the moment, even if we get three points in the derby we have Newcastle and QPR, which will be difficult games.

"United after us have two games that will not be easy, but not difficult like it will be for us. But we have still have a chance."

And there were thoughtful words for Wolves, who bowed out of the Premier League despite a noble effort at Molineux.

"I'm very sorry for them because they played well, and they have always given me a problem every time I have been here. They were strong today, and they had a good mentality."
