Edin Dzeko's white hot-form in training and David Silva being forced to take his medicine were the highlights of the 24 August session.
Dzeko, bidding for a place in the starting XI for Sunday's trip to Liverpool, bagged a hat-trick in the small-sided training match and hit one stunning strike from 20 yards giving Gunnar Nielsen no chance.
As the team wandered out, Aleksandar Kolarov instructed ‘no pictures’ as the camera lens pointed in his direction. “No, Sharon! No more!” he demanded, ending the rant with a trademark grin and wink.
Vincent Kompany did several laps of the pitch with coach Ivan Carminati before one group went through tactical play with Roberto Mancini, featuring distribution from the back while the others did a keep-ball session with one player in the middle.
When Joleon Lescott’s pass brushed Silva’s laces after barely 10 seconds, De Jong was adamant the Spaniard hadn’t touched the ball at all - but when Dedryck Boyata confirmed he had, he was disciplined by the Dutchman for being too honest.
Silva took the third umpire’s decision, but soon found himself back in the middle by popular demand.
As the players took drinks, Kolarov had time to nudge Mario Balotelli over before the session resumed, ending with the Italian have a closer look at the pristine training pitch than he might have liked – Serbia 1, Italy 0.
Then it was time for the short-sided game with Abdul Razak making an impression in midfield by closing down quickly and generally making a nuisance of himself – from the opposition’s view.
Dzeko, however, was a class apart when it came to finishing, all of which bodes well for the weekend trip to Merseyside.
