Euro 2012: Poles axed - Greece is the word!

Co-hosts Poland crashed out of Euro 2012 after a 1-0 defeat in Wroclaw to the Czech Republic left them bottom of Group A.

The Poles, who had drawn their opening two games against Greece and Russia, lost to a 72nd-minute strike by Petr Jiráček and, in truth, never looked like finding the two goals they needed to win thereafter.

The Czech Republic held on comfortably to progress to the last eight - this despite losing their opening game 4-1 to Russia.

Greece, winners of Euro 2004, went into their game against group leaders Russia knowing they had to win and hope Poland failed to win their game.

Despite the odds being stacked against them and being out-played for most of the game, Giorgos Karagounis – earning his 120th cap – scored in first-half injury time to secure a famous win.

Greece celebrate

Russia finished on equal points with Greece with a better goal difference, but the head-to-head record kicks in for any sides finishing level and they are now out.

Greece will almost certainly now face Germany in the quarter-finals while the Czech Republic will play the runners-up of Group B – any one of Portugal, Denmark or Holland.
