Big Joe backs Blues for more silverware

One of City’s greatest goalkeepers, Joe Corrigan, believes the class of 2012 will not repeat the mistakes the class of 1968 made.

The last time the Blues lifted the League title, the following campaign proved to be a huge anti-climax with a thirteenth placed finish.

A young Corrigan played four times that season, but he believes Roberto Mancini’s side will again challenge for major honours again during the 2012/13.

“With the Premier League being so hard these days and the attitude of the manager, staff and players, I can’t see that happening next season.

“When we fell eight points behind of United after losing at Arsenal, everyone could have given up the ghost and said ‘that’s it’ – but they didn’t. They re-focused and never gave up which in turn eventually won us the title.

“Back in ’68 we started badly and just never really recovered.

That won’t happen again – not with this team and I expect there will be one or two more fantastic players coming in over the summer, too

“The standards have been set now with the FA Cup and Premier League trophies won in the past two years, I think we will kick on again and do really well in the Champions League as well as being a major contender to win the title again.

“I can only see us getting stronger, but the expectancy levels are such that people will think we should win trophies next season, but that all comes with being successful.”

Corrigan, naturally, has kept a close on eye on Joe Hart’s progress over the past few years and he has been impressed by what he has seen.

“In Joe Hart we have a diamond and he was one of the main reasons we won the League last season,” he said.

“He didn’t have that much to do because we have two central defenders in Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott who both really stepped up to the mark when they needed to most – but when he was called upon, he was brilliant.

“We need him to stay fit because he is such a huge part of this team.”
