Mario strikes with Italy’s final, decisive goal in a comfortable 3-1 win over Denmark on his return to Milan.

Balotelli missed out on Italy’s 3-1 win over Armenia with illness on Friday but he returned to the Azzurri line-up for their clash with Denmark, latching onto a pass from Andrea Pirlo in the 55th minute to finish with aplomb.

Italy scored their first two goals shortly before the break through Montolivo and De Rossi but Denmark halved the deficit just before half-time courtesy of William Kvist.

A sending off for Roma’s Osvaldo could have been terminal for Italy’s lead but Mario was the hero, scoring his first goal for his country since his brace in the Euro 2012 semi-final against Germany.

Elsewhere, David Silva had the honour of being the only non-Barcelona/Real Madrid player in the Spanish starting XI for their match against France but the night didn’t end well for David as he was withdrawn after just 12 minutes.

David appeared to be holding his hamstring when he limped off but he will return to City to be assessed by the medical team on his return to Manchester and we’ll bring you news on the injury here on mcfc.co.uk as soon as we have it.

Spain replaced Silva with Arsenal’s Santi Carzola and Los Rojas took the lead after 25 minutes through Sergio Ramos at his home stadium in Madrid.

The World Champions looked like they were on their way to a comfortable win but France rallied and found a dramatic equaliser in the last minute courtesy of Carzola’s Arsenal teammate Olivier Giroud.

Juanfran gifted possession to Moussa Sissoko who combined well with Franck Ribery, before the latter swung in a cross for Giroud to head home.

Gael Clichy was an unused substitute for Les Bleus.

Spain and France share top spot in Group I with seven points each.
