UEFA Champions League opponents: CSKA Moscow

Russian champions CSKA were pulled from Pot Two to face City in this season's competition.

Manager:

Leonid Slustsky.

Former goalkeeper Leonid Slutsky began his coaching career in youth football at Olimpia Volograd and worked his way up from there.

His breakout success came at Krylya where he guided them into Europe against all-the-odds. That success convinced CSKA to make Slutsky Juande Ramos’s replacement in the Russian capital.

Slutsky led them to a league and cup double last season and the Super Cup in July this year.

Euro Pedigree:

CSKA have plenty of experience in the UEFA Champions League, having appeared on ten occasions but their biggest continental success came in the UEFA Europa League.

Under the stewardship of Valery Gazzaev, a Daniel Carvalho-inspired Moscow defeated Sporting 3-1 to lift their first major European trophy.

In their last Champions League campaign, CSKA reached the round of 16 in 2012.

Best UCL finish:

Quarter-finals: 2010.

Stadium:

Luzhniki Stadium, 78,360 capacity

Star man: Alan Dzagoev

It feels like Russian playmaker Alan Dzagoev has been around for a long time already but he’s still only 23-years old.

The Beslan-born midfielder has been a regular first-teamer at CSKA since 2008 and has already made more than 170 appearances for the club.

A set piece specialist, Dzagoev is considered as one of Russian football’s shining lights, helping him to 28 caps – an impressive number considering his modest years.
