Gael Clichy says the fans will be foremost in his mind when City take on Wigan in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The France international admits losing the Premier League title was a bitter pill to swallow, but says securing silverware this season will be great for the team - but most of all for the fans.

“Of course it was disappointing not to win the title, but we have a chance of winning the FA Cup and if we do it will still be a good season,” he said.

“We’ve also secured a place in the Champions League which is really important to us. But the first thing we must concentrate on is winning the FA Cup and we have to try our best to do this.

“We can still win a trophy, so it’s a big occasion for us and we will be ready for it.

"It’s going to be a great match for the fans and we want to do it for them.”

An FA Cup medal in 2005 gave Clichy his first domestic cup honour when Arsenal beat Manchester United on penalties in May that year.

The left-back says it is hard to explain the magic of the FA Cup and it is always a privilege to be involved in such a special competition.

“Finals are always very special and we know how important the FA Cup is and we have to try and win it. It’s a big occasion for us and we will be ready for it,” he smiled.

“If we win the FA Cup then it will be a good boost as we try to win the title back next year, but we have to take one thing at a time.”

Taking the trophy home would help end the season on a high note, but Clichy feels the Blues have already had a strong season, even if it hasn’t been quite the campaign everyone hoped for.

“Any team in England would be happy to finish second or third in the Premier League and win the FA Cup, so if we do it, it will still be a good season.

“Of course it was disappointing not to retain the title, but it is a big challenge to win it two years in a row. We’ll learn from this year and return stronger next season.”
