Great FA Cup goals: Steve MacKenzie

Some FA Cup finals reverberate through the generations.

City’s 1981 meeting with Spurs was undoubtedly one of those.

Unfortunately for City, it’s a final that ultimately ended in defeat thanks to the Argentine maestro Ricky Villa but take nothing away from Steve MacKenzie’s 25-yard howitzer that lifted the roof off Wembley.

Back then, FA Cup finals would go to a replay if the teams couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes and that was the case in 1981, when Hutchison scored at both ends in the first game on 9 May.

The teams met again five days later and John Bond’s City got off to a terrible start when Villa put the Londoners ahead after eight minutes but MacKenzie’s stunning volley levelled matters three minutes later.

The Blues took the lead again after 50 minutes but a strike from Garth Crooks and an incredible solo goal from Villa meant that City’s wait for a major trophy went on.

Still, MacKenzie's strike is one of the great goals in one of the great finals.

They just don't make them like that anymore...

Sing the boys off to Wembley

For the forthcoming Barclays Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday 7 May, supporters who hold concession seasoncards, can enjoy a free upgrade. This enables those junior seasoncards to be used by an adult for no extra charge.

It presents an ideal opportunity to use any Seasoncards which may not be used during school term, and to see the Blues in the final league game before setting off for Wembley.

Tickets are still available for the WBA home game, which can be bought online at www.mcfc.co.uk/tickets or by phone on 0161 444 1894 (24 hour).
