City’s upcoming UEFA Champions League opponents failed to arrest their alarming slump in form this weekend in the Russian Premier League.
Defeat away to Zenit St Petersburg was CSKA’s third-successive in the Russian Premier League and means that the reigning champions are now languishing in sixth place, 11 points behind Luciano Spalleti’s men.
It was a victory which represented revenge for Zenit after their 3-0 defeat to CSKA in the Russian Super Cup earlier this season.
Roman Shirokov opened the scoring after 16 minutes before Hulk added a sublime second on the stroke of half-time – a goal worthy of winning any game.
Moscow could find no reply in the second half, meaning they have now lost four of their last five league matches.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich won again - this time 4-1 over Mainz 05.
Thomas Muller hit a brace, while Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben also added goals to keep Bayern top of the Bundesliga by a point.
On Wednesday night, they play the first match of their double header against Viktoria Plzen in Germany.
The Czech champions rescued a 1-1 draw against relegation battlers Slavia Prague on Saturday night after Frantisek Raktoral equalised Prague’s early goal on the hour mark.
That result means that Plzen now trail Sparta Prague by five points at the top of the Gambrinus Liga.
