Silva: We only play to win

David Silva says the trip to Liverpool is the exactly the sort of game the City players thrive on.

Silva, voted Etihad Player of the Month for March, says the bigger the game the better for the Blues who know that a positive result at Anfield will tilt the balance of the title race back in City’s favour.

He admits, however, Liverpool on their own turf represents one of the toughest challenges in the Premier League this season.

“We look forward to the big games and matches like this are special,” said Silva. “We know how well Liverpool have been playing, but our form has been very good, too.

"“They may have scored a few more goals than us and have four more points, but they have also played two more games than we have which obviously makes a big difference."

“It’s one of seven important games we still have to play and I believe we need to play like we all ways play and that means we will go to Anfield to attack and look to score goals.”

With such stellar talents in midfield, both sides will aim to gain the upper hand in the early exchanges but Silva believes it’s not just the battle between Gerrard, Coutinho, Sterling and Henderson versus Samir Nasri, Fernandinho and Yaya Toure –  he says battles will be taking place all over the pitch.

“There are too many factors that could decide the game but without doubt, having control of the ball will be very important,” he said.

“We go there to win - a draw is not a bad result but we never play to draw. We go out to win every game and Sunday will be no different.”

Despite Silva’s superb form this season, particularly over the past three months, he doesn’t believe he has yet hit his best form this campaign! Surely bad news for clubs the Blues are yet to play….

“I feel I am playing well and I’m enjoying my football but don’t think it’s the best I have played in my career,” he said.

“I am now playing in the position where I feel more comfortable than anywhere else and where I enjoy playing the most so maybe that is showing through when I play.”

So can El Mago achieve a dream treble this season? Asked if he had to choose two of a possible three from City winning the title, Spain retaining the World Cup and the PFA Player of the Year – which many City fans believe he should be among the favourites to win - he responded with typical modesty: “I am a team player and football is a team sport, so clearly Premier League and World Cup would be fantastic.”
