Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne is targeting a return to full training at the end of March.

The 24-year-old was a frustrated spectator at Wembley as City lifted the Capital One Cup in dramatic style on Sunday.

De Bruyne more than played his part in the trophy success though, scoring five goals before suffering a serious knee injury in the semi-final second leg against Everton.

That blow ensured his team-mates had to finish the job against Liverpool, and De Bruyne said of the experience: "It was difficult. I hate sitting in the stands. I'd rather watch a match at home, because once you're in a stadium, you always want to be on the pitch.

"It's a weird feeling to miss a final, but I'm really happy we've won. It's my first trophy over here and hopefully not my last. I only missed this game in this campaign. That happens.

"I hope to be back training with the squad in five weeks, after the international break at the end of March. Everything's going according to plan. I've already been working cautiously for four weeks now: doing some squats, training my muscles. Now the brace is off, the real work is about to begin."

De Bruyne is wary of looking too far ahead, but if everything goes according to plan with his rehabilitation, and City convert their 3-1 first leg lead against Dynamo Kyiv into a first ever Champions League quarter-final, a happy coincidence could be in the offing.

"I'm not focusing on a particular date or a particular game," declared De Bruyne.

"It's been a long time ago, since I've been seriously injured (since 2011, when he played for Genk), so we'll see how it goes."

He added: "We still have two leagues to go for. I really can't complain."

Meanwhile, Kevin is on alert for another game-changer - De Bruyne junior.

"My girlfriend can give birth to our son any day now," the midfielder revealed. "The pregnancy is going according to plan too. My phone's switched on, day and night. At Wembley I had a driver on stand-by just in case."
