Tour 2012: Bailey Blog 4 – youth gets its fling

One of the more eye-rubbing experiences of this trip so far has been walking along Seefeld’s pretty main street and hearing Carlos Tevez shout a greeting as he cycles past.

If that isn’t surreal enough for locals and City staff alike, the chances are that Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero might not be far behind as they eschew the luxury people carriers at their bidding to star in their own version of the Tour de Austria!

Tevez cuts a happy, smiling figure around the camp and he is working extra hard on his fitness. He was first to the training ground on Tuesday long before anyone else had arrived and spent a good deal of the session running with physio Lee Nobes.

He later cycled back to the hotel where as usual he was all grins and laughter with well-wishers and teammates alike.

Despite the absence of many familiar faces there is a buoyant spirit about the squad with one particular scene summing up the bond between old(ish) and new on the training pitch.

Shorn of one of his warm up partners (Tevez who was running in case you have forgotten) Yaya Toure – Champions League, Premier League and La Liga winner – beckoned on to the pitch Marcos Lopes at 16-years-old the youngest player in the party (more on him with coach David Platt tomorrow so stay tuned).

Gentle giant that he is, Yaya Toure will let people know if they don’t come up to his exacting standards and it was a feather in the teenager’s cap that he not only galloped into action but didn’t look out of place on the ball.

He later completed some sub-maximal tests which from a distance and to the uninitiated look like the dreaded bleeps but help to test condition and recovery rates.

Most of the players wear heart monitors during the sessions and Lopes was not alone as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero went through the same routine. Other players had their bloods tested.

Another group working together included Aleks Kolarov, Adam Johnson, Kolo Toure, Pablo Zabaleta, Dedryck Boyata and Stefan Savic, whilst two of the keepers worked on their core strength with Robin Sadler.

Later in the first session there was a small-sided game under the watchful eyes of Fausto Salsano, David Platt and Brian Kidd whilst all the while Roberto Mancini took refuge in one of the small dugouts and made notes ahead of the second session of the day.

You might have read in one or two places that there has been some serious planning for this trip and the training too has been designed down to the last minute of each day leading initially to the game against Al Hilal in Innsbruck on Friday night.

Just in case you are wondering the church bells are still ringing loud and proud at 7am and the ultra-polite locals who are being allowed into the training ground adore having City here.
