After England lost on penalties to Italy on Sunday night, Monday's media attention is firmly focussed on a certain Italian striker.
Italy progressed to the semi-final of Euro 2012 at the expense of England providing the papers with an opportunity to go Mario mad.
The Daily Mail provides a blow-by-blow account of Mario's performance, from his first minute shot to his converted penalty. The Mail compliments this with an article about an Italian farmer who has created an image of Mario in one of his fields.
The Sun also takes a look at the City star's performance and compares his night with England opponent Wayne Rooney's.
With Mario the topic of so much discussion, perhaps the last word should go to Italy boss Cesare Prandelli who said of the striker,
Mario came and said he wanted to take the first penalty. It means he has a lot of character. I think he was excellent.
...Cesare Prandelli ...
City keeper Joe Hart was understandably disappointed to go out of the competition on penalities and told the BBC,
"We went into the match with the confidence that we would win even if it went to penalties.
We've gone out of a tournament that we've laid the foundations for really well, played with everything we've got and unfortunately we weren't good enough tonight."
The City custodian went on to say,
"I'd like to be optimistic now but that's not the feeling in my heart at the moment, I'm an emotional guy and I put everything I had into these. I’m gutted for the people who paid money to come out here to support us and see us and for the people back home.”
