Mirror: City eyeing January swoop for Diarra

Manchester versus London. That’s the theme in this morning’s reports!

First off, City are set to go up against Arsenal to compete for the signature of Lassana Diarra when the transfer window reopens in less than a month – that’s if a report in the Mirror is to be believed.

The Frenchman has been turning heads during his time in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala and now Lokomotiv Moscow. Diarra also has Premier League experience thanks to spells with Chelsea, Portsmouth and Arsene Wenger’s men.

Writes Paul Gorst: “The defensive midfielder has a contract until 2016 with Lokomotiv and is thought to be happy with life in the Russian capital.

“However, City and the Gunners hope that the lure of a Premier League return will be enough to tempt him into expressing a desire to leave Moscow.

“Diarra spent the latter part of 2007 with the Gunners, and he also had top-flight experience with Chelsea and Portsmouth, before he departed for Real Madrid in 2009.”

Speaking of Arsenal,  former Chelsea footballer Tony Cascarino reckons it’s a two-horse race for the title – City against the Gunners.

The two teams face off at the Etihad Stadium on 14 December in what should be an exciting game between two sides in excellent form.

Cascarino told TalkSPORT: “As it stands today do I think any other team can challenge Arsenal? I think Manchester City could be the only ones. Now they’re back in the running, they’re the only team that could seriously challenge them.

“I still don’t think Chelsea are quite there. I’m not quite sure what sort of side Chelsea are at the moment.”

It is worth remembering it is only December of course!

Finally, a bizarre story has been doing the rounds in recent days about the possibility of Stevan Jovetic moving back to the Serie A when the window opens – this is a player that only arrived at the Etihad Stadium in July!

Stevan Jovetic two

Well, I’ll leave this one in the capable hands of his agent, who has been telling reporters in Italy what he makes of the speculation – translated by Sky Sports.

Fali Ramadani told Calciomercato: "No, there is absolutely nothing.

"Nobody called me also because everyone knows that it is unimaginable that a player who arrived a few months ago can already move."

When the window does open, remember nothing is confirmed until you read it right here on mcfc.co.uk!
