There is deserved praise for Fernandinho in the media this morning.

The Brazilian has been in superb form of late and will surely come into the thinking of national team boss Luiz Felipe Scolari before too long – and Give Me Sport have today joined his growing fan club.

Charlie Malam writes: “Fernandinho’s partnership with Yaya Toure has given City an added dimension in midfield and the Brazilian seems to have instantly registered a connection with the Ivorian powerhouse.

“Their innate understanding enables them to cover each other’s roles with ease. Toure is predominantly deployed as an attacking central midfielder within Manuel Pellegrini’s rigid 4-4-2 system, and his midfield counterpart will subsequently cover him during an attack.

“In spite of this the pair have shown they are equally capable at compensating for each other’s roles, Toure will deputise defensively should the Brazilian opt to join in City's attack.”

In other news, Micah Richards says while City have got things right in attack, it’s time to tighten up at the back.

With two more goals conceded against Plzen in midweek, the Blues have shipped 20 goals in all competitions so far – and Micah says that’s too many.

Sky Sports report: “In each of the last three Premier League campaigns, no other side have conceded fewer top-flight goals than City.

“But, with inspirational captain and centre-back Vincent Kompany having been injured for some time, there have been some defensive struggles.

“Richards is well aware of that fact and the City defender said: ‘We are playing some great stuff - at the weekend against Tottenham (a 6-0 top-flight home win on Sunday) we were outstanding.

"But we have just got to sort out the goals against now. We want more clean sheets. In the last three years we have had the best defence.

"We have been a bit shaky this season but hopefully we can put that right now."
