Good morning and welcome to 2016 – we’ll kick off with the first of our Transfer Talk specials which will run throughout January.
With the window officially opening tomorrow, City are being linked with a number of high-profile stars around Europe and again, Real Madrid play-maker Isco is being linked with a move to the Etihad.
Let’s begin with ESPN who report: “The Sun reports that Manchester City are aware of the plans of rivals United to spend big this January, and are preparing a £32-million bid for Isco -- who is reportedly keen to leave Real Madrid -- to provide balance to what has been an entertaining yet frustrating campaign for Manuel Pellegrini's side so far.
“The 23-year-old midfielder is said to be ‘unhappy with his bit-part role at the Bernabeu,’ while ‘City chief executive Ferran Soriano is reported to have met Isco's agent Jose Angel Sanchez in the last few days to talk numbers.’”
Real Madrid News – an unofficial site – continue the theme: “Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano is in Spain talking to Real Madrid representatives about a deal that would see Isco move to the Premier League side, according to reports.
“Fichajes.net said the Citizens are keen to follow up their long-term interest in the playmaker and agree a transfer in January when the window opens again.
“The 23-year-old would be reunited with former boss Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium – the pair worked together at Malaga before Isco’s switch to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2013.
“The Spain international has featured 79 times in the league for Los Blancos in his time at the club scoring 13 times in total. More often than not under both Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez the playmaker has been used from the bench.
“Speculation surrounding Isco has been present for a long time and while he is happy in Madrid, he would be willing to move for more first team football. City have long wanted to sign the midfielder and just missed out on him when he opted to join Los Blancos.
“Should City come up with a firm offer, they could face competition from Premier League leaders Arsenal, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger a big fan.”
Meanwhile, the Metro report the Blues are preparing a bid for one of the Bundesliga’s brightest stars – though his club have reported he isn’t for sale at any price.
The Metro write: “Finally, Manchester City are lining up a big-money move for this January as they target yet another attacking player in Leroy Sane.
“The 19-year-old Schalke forward has established himself as one of Germany’s biggest talents this season, and is also wanted by Liverpool.
“However, City could move ahead of their rivals as they are said to be ready to pay around £32m for Sane’s signature this winter.”
The Blues have been linked with a January bid for Jamie Vardy in recent weeks, but the Foxes are reportedly set to usurp any outside interest by securing a new deal for their star striker.
Squawka suggest: “Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy will be offered a bumper new contract to ward off interest from Chelsea and Manchester City, according to the Telegraph.
“Vardy has been in electric form all season and has been a revelation at the King Power Stadium, where he has won the hearts of fans up and down the country thanks to his rags to riches story coming from a non-league background.
“The former Fleetwood Town forward has fired 15 Premier League goals so far this season and has been one of the division’s best performers, inspiring Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes to top of the table at Christmas.
“And now sitting second heading into the New Year, Leicester look set to offer Vardy a new deal in the hope of fending off potential suitors, with both Manchester City and Chelsea keen on snatching his services, according to the report.”
And that’s about it for today, folks. And not one mention of windows slamming shut or war chests…
