Have City replaced one Uruguayan target with another? And is the chase for Isco set for a disappointing conclusion?
Sunday’s Press reports suggest that the Blues’ pursuit of Edinson Cavani has come to an abrupt end, but the courting of his international team-mate, Luis Suarez, has begun.
City have been linked with the Liverpool striker before and whether Manuel Pellegrini will want a player who will banned for the first few months of the new season remains to be seen, but John Richardson of The Sunday Express believes it is a possibility.
He writes: “Liverpool's want-away striker Luis Suarez could be headed for Manchester City.
"Not prepared to meet the £53m escape clause for Napoli's Edinson Cavani, new Etihad boss Manuel Pellegrini is looking to switch his attention to his Uruguayan teammate.
And Liverpool, now reluctantly resigned to losing the former Ajax star, would welcome a bidding war as they look for a big profit on their £23m outlay for the striker
"Suarez is keen to join Real Madrid, who have made noises about signing the 26-year-old over the past month. Liverpool, who have supported him through a number of controversies, feel let down and an auction would give them the final decision on where Suarez goes.
"That has alerted ambitious City, although a bigger challenge for them is to persuade Suarez to remain in England.
Steve Millar of the Daily Star on Sunday follows a similar thread: “Suarez is desperate to quit the Kop and has set his heart on a move to Real Madrid, though they are unsure about signing him.
“But City could offer the Uruguayan the Champions League football he craves, while adding much-needed attacking firepower if Carlos Tevez leaves for AC Milan or Juventus
One deal the media seem certain may not now be happening is the capture of exciting Malaga star Isco
This story has rumbled on for several weeks and has had plenty of twists and turns – but the Press are convinced a flood of optimism from Real Madrid sources is not without foundation.
Typical of the many reports both in England and Spain, is Martin Blackburn in The Sun who reports: “City hoped his relationship with new boss Manuel Pellegrini - who coached Isco in Spain - and the promise of regular first-team football at the Etihad would be enough to convince him.
“But Isco’s outstanding display for Spain at the European Under-21 Championships persuaded Real to step up their bid. And in the last few days they have been relentless in their pursuit of the outstanding young midfielder.
“Director of football Zinedine Zidane has met with the 21-year-old’s father and further talks are pencilled in. Isco has hinted he will announce his decision today and Madrid are now confident they have clinched a deal.
“But Pellegrini officially starts work tomorrow and City hope the Chilean will have time to do some more persuading.”
Hopefully, it isn’t over till it’s over and the Blues can still bring this incredibly talented 21-year-old to the Etihad – but the next few days will no doubt reveal his true destination.
