City EDS suffered a 3-1 friendly defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Platt Lane.
A young Sky Blues side faced a strong Owls team containing many first team regulars and one familiar face – City old boy Jeremy Helan was on the bench.
It was the visitors who struck the first blow with their first real chance of the game, breaking forward down the right hand side and stroking the ball into the net.
City refused to let their heads drop and played their way back into the game, with George Glendon, Emyr Huws and Louis Hutton working particularly well together in the centre of the park, and the hosts did not look at all out of place against seasoned opponents.
But Wednesday made their first team experience felt in the second half with two goals in ten minutes.
The first had a touch of fortune as the ball only found the back of the net after coming back off the post and surviving an initial save from Eirik Holmen Johansen, while the second snuck into the corner despite the best efforts of Huws to block the shot.
City saw out the last 15 minutes with ten men after substitute Alex Nimely was dismissed, but no more goals were forthcoming.
Valuable experience against Football League regulars should stand the EDS in good stead when they resume their domestic league campaign.
CITY: Lawlor (Johansen 45), Drury, Plummer (Bryan 45), Kennedy, Leigh (Byrne 55), Glendon, Huws, Hutton, Pozo (Henshall 45), Hiwula, Rusnak (Nimely 60).
