Yaya Toure aims to evoke the spirit of 2011 as City prepare for Sunday’s Capital One Cup final against Sunderland.
The Ivorian midfielder says the players are desperate to re-create the feeling and atmosphere from the Blues’ FA Cup win over Stoke and banish the memory of last season’s final disappointment against Wigan.
With City reaching the League Cup final for the first time in 38 years, Yaya will look to add to his medals collection against the Black Cats.
“It’s always amazing to play at Wembley and I can’t wait for Sunday’s game against Sunderland,” he said.
I said from day one that I wanted to create history at this club and that I also wanted to be part of history at City so winning this trophy is hugely important to us
“I have very special memories of Wembley and beating United in the semi-final and then beating Stoke in 2011 will always be something I remember. It was an amazing feeling to lift the FA Cup because it was our first trophy for so many years and obviously a great feeling to have scored the winning goal.
“I’ll always remember the scenes after the final whistle, the celebrations and what it meant to our supporters. It was a dream come true for everyone.”
Yaya, with 17 goals already this season, will be an integral part of Manuel Pellegrini’s side against Sunderland and he believes it is vital the Blues continue to add silverware to the trophy cabinet if the Club is to continue moving forward.
“I’ve dedicated my heart to winning cups for this club and I knew when I first arrived that getting the silverware would mean we would attract great players and after the FA Cup, Sergio Aguero signed for us and we went on to win the title,” he said.
“If you want to have great players around you, you need to keep winning trophies – if that happens, more great players will come.
“We have an amazing squad and we are determined to win the Capital One Cup because we might not be quite there yet, but within the next couple of years I expect we will be one of the best teams in the world.
“We are all dedicated to making tis club great and we are not far away from being where we want to be.”
